Therapist Spotlight – John Ruesler, DPT, CMPT, Astym Cert.

For John the decision to enter the profession of physical therapy came during his time working at a skilled nursing facility where he was consistently drawn to the physical therapy/occupational therapy gym because of the positive, fun environment. He notes, “It was the happiest place in the facility.” This led to formal observation hours, then to his decision to pursue a degree in athletic training and physical therapy. Each day, John strives to create a positive “vibe” that his patients feel when they come to therapy. “Often, patients are hurting, nervous or unsure about what to expect,” he states, “it’s my job to create an environment that promotes healing, both physically and emotionally.”

John takes a special interest in using his hands to assess patients and promote recovery. Recently, he completed over two rigorous years of coursework and training to become a Certified Manual Physical Therapist. This training provided him unique, hands-on skills to assess and treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal pain syndromes, with a special emphasis on the spine. Additionally, John is certified in ASTYM, a manual technique used to treat soft tissue sprains, strains, and overuse injuries. “There is value in hands-on therapy. Patients improve more quickly and use fewer healthcare resources when I am able to see them immediately following an injury,” he states. He strives to ensure that every patient is treated as an individual with unique, individualized goals for therapy. “A one-size-fits-all approach to therapy isn’t effective,” he notes, adding “individualized assessment, treatment and communication with each patient is the most fulfilling part of the job.”

This week, John joins the team at Axes Physical Therapy in St. Charles, MO. When asked why he decided to join Axes, he responds, “I joined Axes to be a part of a small and growing team of highly skilled therapists and professionals that are centered on patient care. Axes is comprised of great people and I’m so excited to be a part of this team.” His goal – “I want to promote a practice that positively impacts the lives of my patients and to become a long term resource for my patients, even after they leave formal care in my clinic.”

John practices in St. Charles, MO serving the communities of St. Charles, St. Peters, O’Fallon, and Bridgeton to name a few. To schedule an appointment or free injury assessment, visit
