The Human Shoulder | Shoulder Pain in Chain of Rocks, MO

The shoulder is among the largest and most intricate joints we have. In truth, what is referred to as the shoulder joint is made up of four different joints:

  1. The glenohumeral (GH) joint is the joint where the humerus (upper arm bone) fits into a relatively small dish called the glenoid. Because the the top of the humerus is several times larger than the socket, it is the most mobile joint in the body.
  2. The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is formed by the junction of the collarbone the acromion, the part of the shoulder blade that is the highest part of the shoulder. A plane joint, it allows you to outstretch your arm.
  3. The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is a gliding joint located where the collarbone meets the sternum at the bottom of the neck. This joint is where the arm and torso meet, it coordinates the movement of the upper limb with the core of your body.
  4. The scapulothoracic (ST) “joint” is more of a “floating” joint as it does not have does not have union by fibrous, cartilaginous or synovial tissues. It attaches and allows movement between the shoulder blade and the part of rib cage at the back of our bodies.

The shoulder is supported and surrounded by:

  • the four muscles of the rotator cup covering the head of the upper arm bone, which allow for movement movement and keep the head of the upper arm bone firmly within the shallow socket of the shoulder
  • the shoulder capsule, a soft tissue sac that surrounds and protects the joints in the shoulder
  • the four shoulder ligaments which help connect bone to bone and help reinforce the capsule
  • the tendons in the biceps and shoulder which allow muscles to power the bones
  • the brachial plexus nerves that allow the brain to tell the shoulder and arm to move and the shoulder to tell the brain when it feels pain or other sensory information
  • the arteries that supply nutrient-rich blood to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons

In order for the shoulder to function properly every joint, ligament, tendon, muscle, artery, capsule, and nerve must be able to work together. Sufficient blood must flow to the shoulder efficiently to maintain healthy soft tissue and repair minor damage. The muscles must have adequate strength and flexibility, the tendons connecting them to the bones must be intact and strong, the ligaments that attach our bones need to be similarly healthy, and the nerves need to have a strong and secure connection to the brain. When any of these functions are not being carried out in a healthy way, it can lead to a breakdown of the entire system, and anywhere from nagging to debilitating shoulder pain or loss of function. What Causes Shoulder Pain?

As the shoulder has so many moving parts, shoulder pain can have many root causes, from sports injuries to being struck by an object, a work injury from repeated activities to old age. The following are common causes of shoulder pain that our team see in Chain of Rocks, MO:

  • Bursitis The bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles in and around your shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and other joints. Bursitis the result of the bursae becoming inflamed after overuse, often occurs in association with shoulder impingement, and can make basic tasks like laying down for bed immensely difficult.
  • Tendinitis Tendinitis is typically caused by inflammation or irritation of a tendon. There are two types of tendinitis:
    • Acute: This can happen because of a sudden blow, excessive overhead motions, or other overhead activities common in some sports and occupations, such as volleyball or moving objects above your head.
    • Chronic: This can happen because of degenerative conditions or general weakness as we age.

Symptoms include aching, tenderness, and mild swelling.

  • Rotator Cuff Tear These can also be caused by sudden trauma, such lifting an incredibly heavy object, or wear and tear. They begin with fraying and ultimately tear. A partial tear often goes unnoticed. Complete tears, which go all the way through the tendon, do not heal by themselves. Symptoms include pain with specific movements, pain when sleeping, and a grinding feeling with specific movements.
  • Shoulder Impingement Impingement is the result of the rotator cuff and bursae rubbing against your shoulder blade. It is often the result of rotator cuff swellings because of an injury. Shoulder impingement occurs the most in people who are physically active.
  • Shoulder Instability This occurs when the ball of the upper arm bone is allowed to move out of the socket when the capsule or ligaments become damaged, and also can happen suddenly or from wear and tear. Dislocations can be repeated and partial or the entire bone coming out of the socket. It often is accompanied by injury to the surrounding areas of the shoulder. Long-term instability will cause shoulder pain and a sense of the shoulder “giving way.”
  • Arthritis While there are at least six types of arthritis, the shoulder most commonly experiences osteoarthritis. It occurs when the cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between your bones degenerates. It can be the result of old age, frequent trauma, and overuse. There is no cure for arthritis, but you can find effective pain management techniques with Chain of Rocks, MO physical therapists.
  • Shoulder Fractures The upper arm bone, clavicle, and shoulder blade are the bones in the shoulder most susceptible to breaking. They are often the result of falling from a height or forceful collisions such as a car accident. The shoulder pain is immediate and obvious, and the shoulder will experience considerable swelling and contusions.
  • Axillary Nerve Injuries or Brachial Plexus Injuries Nerve damage in the shoulder can occur when nerves are compressed, when scar tissue blocks communication between the brain and shoulder, or the nerves are torn into two pieces. These injuries can cause shoulder pain along with a range of other sensations. They are commonly caused by high-impact trauma but can also occur because of overuse.

At times, one injury leads to another, such as instability that leads to impingement. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain, one of our safe, free injury screenings in Chain of Rocks, MO may help determine why you’re experiencing the pain. If you’ve sustained a severe injury or have severe shoulder pain, a physician in Chain of Rocks, MO may use a physical examination, various imaging techniques, and/or arthroscopy to discover the cause.
