How Does the Shoulder Work? | Shoulder Pain in Weingarten, MO

The shoulder is one of the the largest and most complex joints we have. In truth, it is made up of four independent smaller joints:

  1. The glenohumeral (GH) joint is the joint responsible for connecting the upper extremity to the trunk. Given the relatively shallow socket, it allows for more movement than any other joint.
  2. The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is formed by the junction of the collarbone the acromion, the part of the scapula that is the highest part of the shoulder. A plane joint, it helps extend the upper extremity from the trunk.
  3. The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is a gliding joint located where the collarbone meets the sternum at the base of the neck. As the only joint that connects the arm to the body, it it ensures your arm and body move in coordination.
  4. The scapulothoracic (ST) “joint” is not a true anatomical joint as it does not have does not have union by fibrous, cartilaginous or synovial tissues. It is made up of the scapula and its articulation with the ribcage.

In order to support those four joints, the shoulder consists of:

  • the four muscles of the rotator cup covering the head of the humerus, which power movement and stabilize the ball of the humerus within the shoulder socket
  • the shoulder capsule, a soft tissue sac that encloses the shoulder
  • the ligaments of the shoulder which provide passive stability while still allowing for movements in different planes
  • the tendons in the biceps and shoulder which attach muscle to bone
  • the brachial plexus nerves that send motor messages from the brain to muscles and sensory information (like pain) from the joints back to the brain
  • the arteries that pump much-needed blood to the shoulder

Being able to move your shoulder pain free depends on every part of the system functioning well. Blood must flow freely to the shoulder keep oxygen levels and muscles strong and repair minor damage. The muscles must have adequate strength and flexibility, the tendons connecting them to the bones must be strong, flexible, and free of rips or tears, the ligaments that attach our bones need to help support proper structure, and the nerves need to have a strong and secure connection to the brain. When any of these parts are not at optimal health, it can lead to a breakdown of the whole system, and anywhere from nagging to debilitating shoulder pain or loss of function. If if shoulder pain or poor shoulder movement is part of your daily life, contact Axes’ physical therapists for a free injury screening.

What’s Behind My Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can be caused by a variety of circumstances, from sports injuries to acute trauma, a work injury from overuse to old age. The following are common causes of shoulder pain that our physical and occupations therapists see in Weingarten, MO:

  • Bursitis The bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles in and around your shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and other joints. Bursitis the result of the bursae becoming irritated after repeated activities, often occurs at the same time as irritation of the rotator cuff, and can make basic activities like carrying groceries tremendously difficult.
  • Tendinitis Tendinitis is typically caused by inflammation or irritation of a tendon. There are two types of tendinitis:
    • Acute: This can happen because of trauma, excessive throwing, or other overhead activities common in some competitive and activities and fields of employment, such as swimming or lifting and lowering boxes.
    • Chronic: The result of degenerative conditions or the body becoming weaker as we get older.

The condition causes pain and tenderness just outside the joint.

  • Rotator Cuff Tear These can also be acute, such lifting an incredibly heavy object, or repetitive movements or old age. They begin with fraying and ultimately tear. A partial tear often goes unnoticed. Full-thickness tears, which go all the way through the tendon, often require surgery. Symptoms include having difficulty raising your arm or lifting things you normally can, pain when lying on the side of the affected shoulder, and a popping feeling with certain motions.
  • Shoulder Impingement Impingement occurs when your acromion (the bony tip of your scapula) irritates the soft tissue in your shoulder. It often occurs in tandem with an injury that causes inflammation in the rotator cuff. Shoulder impingement is most common in people who are physically active.
  • Shoulder Instability This occurs when the head of the upper arm bone is allowed to move out of the socket when the capsule or ligaments become damaged, and also can be the result of injury or wear and tear. Dislocations can be repeated and partial or the entire bone coming out of the socket. It often happens in combination with injury to the surrounding areas of the shoulder. Chronic instability will result in shoulder pain and a sense of the shoulder “giving way.”
  • Arthritis While arthritis refers to a range of diagnoses, the shoulder most commonly suffers from osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bones. Common causes include old age, persistent trauma, and overuse. There is no cure for arthritis, but you can find effective pain management techniques with Weingarten, MO physical and occupational therapists.
  • Shoulder Fractures The humerus, collarbone, and scapula are the bones in the shoulder most prone to breaking. They are often the result of falling from a height or high-impact collisions such as being tackles in a football game. The shoulder pain is immediate and obvious, along with substantial inflammation and contusions.
  • Axillary Nerve Injuries or Brachial Plexus Injuries Nerve damage in the shoulder can occur when nerves are stretched, when scar tissue interferes with signals between the brain and shoulder, or the nerves burst. These injuries can cause shoulder pain along with a range of other sensations. They are commonly caused by high-impact trauma but can also happen because of degenerative conditions.

At times, one injury leads to another, such as how an untreated rotator cuff tear can lead to arthritis. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain, one of our safe, free injury screenings in Weingarten, MO may help you discover why you’re experiencing the pain. If you’ve sustained a severe injury or have severe shoulder pain, a physician in Weingarten, MO may use a physical examination, an X-Ray, an MRI, a CT scan, arthrogram, and/or arthroscopy to discover the cause.
