How Does the Shoulder Work? | Shoulder Pain in Champ, MO

The shoulder is among human body’s largest and most complex joints. In reality, what we call the shoulder joint is made up of four different joints:

  1. The glenohumeral (GH) joint is a ball and socket joint responsible for connecting the upper extremity to the trunk. Because the ball is several times larger than the socket, it has the widest range of motion as any other human joint.
  2. The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is formed by the junction of the clavicle the acromion, the bony tip on the outer edge of the shoulder blade. A plane joint, it allows for additional rotation of the shoulder blade.
  3. The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is a gliding joint formed by the clavicle the sternum at the foundation of the neck. This joint is where the arm and body meet, it it ensures your arm and body act in coordination.
  4. The scapulothoracic (ST) “joint” is more of a “floating” joint as it does not have typical joint characteristics. It is made up of the scapula and its articulation with the ribcage.

In order to support those four joints, the shoulder is made up of:

  • the four muscles of the rotator cup that surround the head of the upper arm bone, which power movement and stabilize the ball of the humerus within the shoulder socket
  • the shoulder capsule, a a fluid-filled sac that surrounds and lubricates the shoulder
  • the ligaments of the shoulder which attach bones together and provide stability for the capsule
  • the tendons in the biceps and shoulder which attach muscle to bone
  • the brachial plexus nerves that allow the brain to tell the shoulder and arm to move and the shoulder to tell the brain when it feels pain or other sensory information
  • the blood vessels that supply much-needed blood to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons

In order for the shoulder to function properly every joint, ligament, tendon, muscle, artery, capsule, and nerve must be able to work together. Blood must be allowed to reach the shoulder keep oxygen levels and muscles strong and stimulate the body’s natural recovery processes. The muscles must have adequate strength and flexibility, the tendons connecting them to the bones must be strong, flexible, and free of rips or tears, the ligaments connecting bones need to help support proper structure, and the brain and shoulder need to have clear communication with each other. When any of these parts are not at optimal health, it often causes shoulder pain and movement problems. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain or any other symptoms of a shoulder injury, reach out to Axes’ physical therapists for a complimentary injury screening.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

As the shoulder is complex, shoulder pain can have many root causes, from sports injuries to being struck by an object, a work injury from overuse to our bodies just getting weaker as we get older. Below are the most common underlying conditions that lead to shoulder pain in Champ, MO:

  • Bursitis The bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that act as shock absorbers and reduce friction in joints. Bursitis the result of the bursae becoming irritated after overuse, often occurs in combination with shoulder impingement, and can make basic tasks like getting in and out of cars incredibly painful.
  • Tendinitis Tendinitis is typically caused by inflammation or irritation of a tendon. There are two causes of tendinitis:
    • Acute: The result of trauma, repeated overhead motions, or other overhead activities common in some competitive and activities and fields of employment, such as tennis or lifting boxes above your head.
    • Chronic: This can happen because of degenerative conditions or general weakness as we get weaker.

Symptoms include a dull ache, throbbing, and slight swelling.

  • Rotator Cuff Tear These can also be caused by acute injuries, like falling on an outstretched arm, or wear and tear. The tendon is initially frayed before becoming torn. A partial tear often goes unnoticed. Complete tears, which go all the way through the tendon, often require surgery. Associated symptoms are pain with certain movements, pain when sleeping, and a popping feeling when performing specific movements.
  • Shoulder Impingement Impingement is the result of soft tissue rubbing against your shoulder blade. It often occurs in tandem with an injury that causes inflammation in the rotator cuff. Shoulder impingement is most common in people who play sports or are otherwise active.
  • Shoulder Instability This happens when the head of the humerus is allowed to move out of the socket when the capsule or ligaments become stretched, torn, or detached, and also can be the result of injury or wear and tear. Dislocations can be repeated and partial or the entire bone coming out of the socket. It often causes or is the result of injury to the surrounding areas of the shoulder. Long-term instability will cause shoulder pain and unsteadiness when performing certain motions.
  • Arthritis While there are many kinds of arthritis, the shoulder most typically suffers from osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bones. It can be the result of old age, persistent trauma, and wear and tear. Arthritis cannot be cured, but effective pain management is possible with Champ, MO physical therapists.
  • Shoulder Fractures The upper arm bone, clavicle, and scapula are the most commonly broken bones in the shoulder. They usually happen as the result of falling a significant distance or onto a hard surface or high-impact collisions such as a car accident. The shoulder pain is immediate and obvious, along with considerable swelling and contusions.
  • Axillary Nerve Injuries or Brachial Plexus Injuries Nerve damage in the shoulder is the result of when nerves are impinged on, when scar tissue blocks their electric signals, or the nerves are otherwise damaged. Axillary nerve and brachial plexus injuries can cause shoulder pain along with a range of other sensations. They are usually the result of a sudden blow but can also happen because of degenerative conditions.

At times, one injury leads to another, for example how an untreated rotator cuff tear can lead to arthritis. If you’re currently suffering from shoulder pain, one of our safe, free injury screenings in Champ, MO may help you discover the root of it.
