The Human Shoulder | Shoulder Pain in Gray Summit, MO

The shoulder is among the largest and most intricate joints we have. In truth, it is made up of four independent smaller joints:

  1. The glenohumeral (GH) joint is the joint responsible for connecting the upper extremity to the trunk. Given the relatively shallow socket, it allows for more movement than any other joint.
  2. The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is formed by the junction of the clavicle the acromion, the part of the scapula that is the highest part of the shoulder. A plane joint, it allows your shoulder blade to follow the movements of the other shoulder joints.
  3. The sternoclavicular (SC) joint is a plane-style synovial joint located where the collarbone meets the sternum at the base of the neck. As the only joint that connects the arm to the body, it links the movement of the upper limb with the core of your body.
  4. The scapulothoracic (ST) “joint” is not a true anatomical joint as it does not have does not have union by fibrous, cartilaginous or synovial tissues. It attaches and allows movement between the shoulder blade and the thoracic cage.

The shoulder is supported and surrounded by:

  • the four muscles of the rotator cup covering the head of the upper arm bone, which power movement and keep the head of the humerus firmly within the shallow socket of the shoulder
  • the shoulder capsule, a tough sheath or membrane that surrounds and protects the joints in the shoulder
  • the four shoulder ligaments which provide passive stability while still allowing for a wide range of movements
  • the biceps tendon and rotator cuff tendons which allow muscles to power the bones
  • the brachial plexus nerves that allow the brain to tell the shoulder and arm to move and the shoulder to tell the brain when it feels pain or other sensory information
  • the blood vessels that supply nutrient-rich blood to the shoulder

Proper shoulder strength, flexibility, and movement depends on every part of the system being healthy and working together. Sufficient blood must reach to the shoulder efficiently to maintain healthy soft tissue and stimulate the body’s natural recovery processes. The muscles must have adequate strength and flexibility, the tendons attaching bone and muscle must be strong, flexible, and free of rips or tears, the ligaments that attach our bones need to be similarly healthy, and the nerves need to have a strong and secure connection to the brain. When any of these parts are not at optimal health, it often causes shoulder pain and movement problems. If if shoulder pain or poor shoulder movement is part of your daily life, contact Axes’ physical therapists for a complimentary injury screening.

What Causes Shoulder Pain?

As the shoulder is complex, shoulder pain can have any of a number of root causes, from sports injuries to falls, a work injury from repeated activities to our bodies just getting weaker as we get older. The following are common causes of shoulder pain that our physical and occupations therapists see in Gray Summit, MO:

  • Bursitis The bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles in and around your shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and other joints. Bursitis the result of the bursae becoming irritated after overuse, often occurs at the same time as shoulder impingement, and can make basic tasks like laying down to go to sleep immensely painful.
  • Tendinitis Tendinitis is typically caused by a tendon becoming irritated. There are two types of tendinitis:
    • Acute: This can happen because of a sudden blow, repeated overhead motions, or other overhead activities common in some sports and occupations, such as throwing overhead or lifting boxes overhead.
    • Chronic: This can happen because of degenerative conditions or general weakness as we age.

The condition causes pain and tenderness just outside the joint.

  • Rotator Cuff Tear These can also be caused by acute injuries, like lifting an incredibly heavy object, or repetitive movements or old age. They usually start with fraying and then tear. People often live with partial tears obliviously. Complete tears, which pull the tendon off the bone, often require surgery. Associated symptoms are having difficulty raising your arm or lifting things you normally can, pain when sleeping, and a popping sensation when performing certain movements.
  • Shoulder Impingement Impingement describes when your acromion (the bony tip of your shoulder blade) irritates the rotator cuff and bursae. It often occurs alongside an injury that causes inflammation in the rotator cuff. Shoulder impingement is most common in people who are physically active.
  • Shoulder Instability This happens when the humerus is allowed to move out of the socket when the capsule or ligaments become damaged, and also can be the result of injury or overuse. A dislocation can be partial, coming in and out of the socket, or complete when the bone completely comes out of the socket. It often happens in combination with injury to the supporting soft tissue of the shoulder. Chronic instability will cause shoulder pain and unsteadiness when performing certain motions.
  • Arthritis While arthritis refers to a range of diagnoses, osteoarthritis is the form that typically affects the shoulder. It is the result of the cartilage cushioning the ends of your bones weakens and wears away. It can be the result of tissue weakening as we become older, persistent injuries, and wear and tear. There is no cure for arthritis, but you can find effective pain management methods with Gray Summit, MO physical therapists.
  • Shoulder Fractures The upper arm bone, clavicle, and shoulder blade are the bones in the shoulder most susceptible to fracture. They are often the result of falling from a height or forceful collisions such as a car accident. The shoulder pain is usually severe, along with substantial inflammation and contusions.
  • Axillary Nerve Injuries or Brachial Plexus Injuries Nerve damage in the shoulder can occur when nerves are impinged on, when scar tissue blocks communication between the brain and shoulder, or the nerves are otherwise damaged. These injuries can cause shoulder pain along with a range of other sensations. They are commonly caused by high-impact trauma but can also occur because of wear and tear.

Sometimes, injuries are intertwined, such as an impingement that leads to damage to the nerves. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain, one of our no-obligation, free injury screenings in Gray Summit, MO may help determine the root of it. If you’ve sustained a severe injury or have severe shoulder pain, a physician in Gray Summit, MO may use a physical examination, various imaging techniques, and/or arthroscopy to discover the cause.
